Article Contents What are palpitations? What is the normal heartbeat? What are symptoms of arrhythmias? What are the causes of arrhythmias? How are palpitations evaluated? How are palpitations managed? Palpitations At A Glance Palpitations Index How are palpitations managed? Palpitations without associated arrhythmias and heart diseases may not require specific treatment. Patients are often advised simply to reduce emotional and physical stress while monitoring their symptoms. Palpitations resulting from premature contractions (PACs tenormin and palpitation and PVCs) often require no specific treatment. The frequency of premature contractions can be reduced by stress reduction, stopping cigarettes, and reducing caffeine and alcohol consumption. High blood adrenaline levels can lead to premature contractions, while stress reduction helps to lower tenormin and palpitation blood adrenaline levels. For patients with persistent palpitations and premature contractions, medications, such as beta-blockers, can be used to block the effect of adrenaline on the heart, thus reducing premature contractions. Examples of beta-blockers include propranolol (Inderal), metoprolol tenormin and palpitation (Lopressor), and atenolol (Tenormin). Side effects of beta blockers include worsening of asthma, excessive lowering of heart rate and blood pressure, depression, fatigue, and impotence. For further information, please read the tenormin and palpitation Inderal, Tenormin, and Lopressor articles. Atrial tachycardias (atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, and PAT) are managed with calcium tenormin and palpitation channel blockers such as verapamil (Calan), beta blockers such as propranolol tenormin and palpitation (Inderal), and digoxin (Lanoxin). The goal of treatment is to slow down the rate of ventricular contractions (which are responding to the abnormal atrial signals), and to convert heart rhythm back tenormin and palpitation to normal sinus rhythm. For further information, please read the Atrial Fibrillation article. In patients with atrial tachycardias resistant to above medications, quinidine, procainamide (Pronestyl), or disopyramide (Norpace) are added. Quinidine, Pronestyl, and Norpace can themselves cause serious ventricular tachycardias. The most important causes of ventricular arrhythmias (ventricular tachycardias and fibrillations) tenormin and palpitation are heart attack, inadequate oxygenated blood to the tenormin and palpitation heart muscle (ischemia), and scars from previous heart attacks. Therefore, treatment of the coronary heart disease is important in managing patients with ventricular arrhythmias. For further information, please read the following articles: Coronary Artery Bypass Graft, Angioplasty, Heart Attack, and Angina articles. tenormin and palpitation For patients with persistent ventricular tachycardias, medications such as propanolol (Inderal), sotolol (Betapace), and amiodarone (Cordarone) are used. For further information, please visit the Medications Center. In patients with life threatening ventricular fibrillations, implantable defibrillators are considered. Implanted defibrillators can sense the onset of ventricular fibrillation, and deliver a jolt of electrical impulse to the heart to convert it back to normal rhythm. In patients tenormin and palpitation with arrhythmias associated with significant heart muscle or valve disease, correction of the underlying heart disease is important. Patients with severe aortic stenosis can develop heart failure as well as serious ventricular arrhythmias. Treatment of the aortic stenosis by valve repair surgery (valvuloplasty), and/or by surgical valve replacement can alleviate these problems. For further information, please read the Aortic Stenosis article. Some patients who suffer palpitations also tenormin and palpitation have periods of dizziness or loss of tenormin and palpitation consciousness (syncope). These tenormin and palpitation patients are sometimes evaluated by heart electrical specialists called "electrophysiologists." A more detailed study of the heart's electrical system can be performed by these specialists who use devices to stimulate areas of the heart to detect abnormal electrical pathways. Palpitations At A Glance Palpitations can occur without heart disease or as a result of abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias). The SA node is the pacemaker of the heart. Slow heart rhythms are called bradycardias. Rapid heart tenormin and palpitation rhythms are called tachycardias. tenormin and palpitation The average normal heart beats at a rate of 60 times per minute. Some patients with arrhythmias have no symptoms while others can have symptoms, such as palpitations, dizziness, shortness of breath, or chest pain. Arrhythmias can occur tenormin and palpitation because of disease of heart muscle, valves, electrical system, or arteries tenormin and palpitation to the heart (coronary arteries). Palpitations can be evaluated with testing, such as blood tests, echocardiogram, EKG, Holter monitor, treadmill testing, and tests tenormin and palpitation of the coronary arteries. Palpitations can be relieved in many patients by stress reduction, stopping cigarettes, and reduction of caffeine and alcohol. Some patients tenormin and palpitation have palpitations associated with abnormal tenormin and palpitation heartbeats that can require medications.
